Jabil Circuit Inc. will lay off 120 workers at its local facilities, company officials said today.
The St. Petersburg-based manufacturing company cited a downturn in business among customers that hire Jabil to assemble their electronic goods. Jabil counts companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. and Nokia among its clients.
Jabil employs 1,880 in the St. Petersburg area, where it keeps a headquarters building and two assembly plants that conduct pilot manufacturing and construction of military and aerospace electronics.
Globally, Jabil employs more than 75,000 people at dozens of factories.
The cuts come at an important time for Jabil in St. Petersburg. The company is negotiating with local governments on millions of dollars in incentives to expand its headquarters and add workers in the area.
"We certainly will look towards rehiring many of these same employees as the economy rebounds and business demands return," Jabil spokeswoman Beth Walters said.
At midday, stock in Jabil fell 9 cents to $12.72 per share.
