Deputies on a routine air patrol of Port Manatee on Friday needed to make an emergency landing after a turkey buzzard struck their helicopter, Manatee County deputies said.
About 4 p.m., deputies Ben Sehorne and Brady McCabe were returning to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office hangar when the bird struck the helicopter. At the time, the deputies were at an altitude of 500 feet and flying at a speed of 80 knots.
"The bird struck with such force that the impact shattered the windshield directly in front of Deputy Sehorne," a sheriff's office news release states. "The instrument panel was also compromised. The bird then struck Deputy Sehorne in the chest area and then caromed out the open door."
Sehorne safely piloted the helicopter's emergency landing, according to deputies.
Neither deputy was injured.
