Regarding "Deputies Honored For Actions" (Metro, Sept. 10):
The Tribune highlighted recognition received by Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies Malachi McCoy, Arturo "Art" Lence and Raymond Wilson for their actions in a horrific event on June 7.
On that day, a local man killed three, fled the scene and then turned his violence on responding deputies, two of whom were shot and seriously injured during the gunfight.
Each of us owes a debt of gratitude to these men and the many others like them who respond to our community's daily calls for assistance. Upon learning of the violent circumstances suddenly inflicted upon these three men and several other responding officers, it again occurred how these officers are frequently forsaken.
It is during tragic events like these that we realize both how delicate life is and the potential sacrifices officers everywhere make after leaving the academy. It is while most rely on their coworkers to assist in a report, prepare for a meeting or meet a deadline that these men and women rely on each other to ensure their return to duty to again serve the community tomorrow.
