The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Thursday to avoid buying infant formula imported from China, citing reports of babies in that country who have fallen ill with kidney problems after consuming suspect formula.
There is no indication that the tainted formula has made it onto American store shelves, nor are there reports of any infant injuries in the United States. Unapproved Chinese-made infant formula, however, has been found in the United States before.
"We're concerned that there may be some formula that has come in illegally and could potentially be in the ethnic Chinese markets," said Janice Oliver of the FDA. "We want to warn members of the Chinese community to avoid using Chinese-manufactured infant formulas."
The contaminant in the Chinese infant formula is melamine, which was found in tainted pet food last year.
