ST. PETERSBURG - Countryside's defense held Gibbs' offense in check, allowing three first downs and stopping a late fourth-quarter drive for a 21-14 win on Thursday night.
Countryside had taken a 14-0 third-quarter lead on rushing touchdowns by Jimbo Chmelik and Dawrence Roberts. Gibbs answered immediately following Roberts' run, as Jarvis West returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion made the score 14-8 entering the fourth quarter, and Gibbs had a chance to take the lead when Russell Allen picked off Chmelik, and returned the ball 70 yards for a touchdown with 10:56 to play, but Gibbs missed the extra point, leaving the game tied.
Chmelik then led a time-sapping fourth-quarter drive, and found Richard Shockley on a 14-yard touchdown pass to restore the Cougars' lead.
Gibbs did have its chances to tie the game, driving to the Cougars' 37-yard line, but a pass by Gibbs quarterback Josh Rembert on fourth-and-13 was knocked to the ground by Countryside linebacker Craig McManus.
"We were so worried about Gibbs' speed. The kids kept the quarterback contained and did a great job of pass coverage," Countryside coach John Davis said.
