Response To NCAA Out Today

Published: September 12, 2008

TALLAHASSEE - Florida State has completed its written response to the NCAA's notice of allegations - a document the university originally received in June - relating to an academic-misconduct case that involved 60 FSU student-athletes primarily connected to an online music course and a former tutor.

The response to the notice of allegations will be released by FSU officials to the media this morning.
Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman has previously said the notice of allegations, which have not been previously released, does not include any surprises. He has also said the information in FSU's response would not be different from that included in the school's 30-page self-report delivered to the NCAA in February.

In that report, FSU placed itself on two years of probation and planned to reduce scholarships in several sports. A specific recommendation for scholarship reductions was not made by the university, but it is expected to occur during a two-year period.

The six punitive actions taken by the university also included the suspension of student-athletes for 30 percent of their sport's regular-season competition. Men and women's basketball were among those sports impacted in addition to football. The parameter for those suspensions was approved by the NCAA and were handed down last fall. Twenty-two football players, including walk-ons, were suspended from the Music City Bowl. Two other football players were previously suspended.

Of that group, 11 scholarship players remain on the team and they currently are serving the remainder of the suspension.

A hearing before the NCAA Committee on Infractions takes place Oct. 18 in Indianapolis.

ANTONE A-OK: After getting a light workload in Saturday night's season opener, starting TB Antone Smith said he is not worried about how many carries he will get against Chattanooga on Saturday.

"The coaches are the ones that make the calls," said Smith, who rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown on seven carries against Western Carolina. "I'm going to try to be as productive as I can when I get in there."

Since the score got so lopsided so quickly, third-string RB Jermaine Thomas actually ended up with the most carries (13 for 91 yards and two scores) against the Catamounts.

With second-string running back Ty Jones (Middleton) out for Saturday's game, it will likely be Smith and Thomas sharing the bulk of the carries again.

Hurricanes Taking It Easy This Week

CORAL GABLES - After a 21/2-hour practice Thursday, the Miami football team is set to take today and Saturday off since the Hurricanes are off this week and travel to Texas A&M on Sept. 20.

"We're just giving them a break," Coach Randy Shannon said regarding UM's light practice week. "We played a physical game against Florida, so we gave them a break. We came out and spent half the work on Texas A&M and the other half on getting better with technique."

After working through normal position drills, the Hurricanes spent time running against the opponent scout teams before working in 7-on-7 and 9-on-9 scenarios. For the second straight afternoon, the team also stressed running starters against each other.

The Texas A&M game is set for either 3:30 p.m. or 8 p.m.

"They run a pro-style attack," Shannon said. "We may see a little bit of what we saw last week from Florida's offense."
