WESLEY CHAPEL - Macy's says it will open a department store at the Shops at Wiregrass mall on Oct. 25.
That's about five days ahead of the Oct. 30 grand opening for the 800,000-square-foot open-air plaza under construction at the northeast corner of State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
The new Macy's will be the centerpiece of the mall, sitting at the keystone position in the semicircular mall, facing south into the central plaza. Macy's also will have a bridge connecting it to the plaza's two-level parking deck in the rear of the complex.
The 136,300-square-foot department store will be Macy's sixth in the Tampa Bay area. The retailer has stores at WestShore Plaza, University Mall and at Westfield malls in Brandon, Citrus Park and Countryside.
Macy's joins Dillard's and JCPenney as anchors in the mall being developed by Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises and West Palm Beach-based The Goodman Co.
Choosing an opening day hinges on completion of the eastern extension of S.R. 56, which is under construction in front of the mall and will be the primary access point. Work on the road has faced a string of delays in recent months.
Pasco County officials in recent weeks have helped the road builders - Forest City, Locust Branch LLC and Meadow Pointe IV Community Development District - resolve problems with the neighboring Shoppes at New Tampa to speed up construction. Road crews also have been cleared to work at night.
