Hip fractures can be fatal.
One in three women will break her hip by the age of 90, and one in four who does so will die within a year, according to a study from the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Among Floridians, 3 million of whom suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass (a number experts say will rise by 56 percent to 4.7 million by 2020), learning how to reduce that risk is especially important.
A new online resource, www.oscal.com/bumpitup, offers a calcium calculator and fracture risk calculator as well as hip fracture facts, ways to reduce risk, questions to ask the doctor and information about calcium and vitamin D. The site invites users to "do the bump" - a virtual version of the hip-shaking dance from the '70s - by "bumping" hip health information to others they care about.
The site, which is sponsored by Os-Cal calcium supplements, also allows visitors to download product coupons and enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for four to Hollywood.
