CCC 9, Tampa Catholic 6

Published: September 13, 2008

THE DIFFERENCE: The host Marauders (2-0) used a strong defense and a clock-eating rushing attack to keep Tampa Catholic (0-2) off the field for much of the second half. The tropical storm-like rains that drenched the field for most of the first half forced both teams into a ground attack that played into CCC's hands. Part of the reason the teams turned to their rushing attacks was neither quarterback could hang on to the wet ball. CCC running back Micah Poole's 4-yard run to the right corner of the end zone through the deluge in the second quarter proved to be the winning score.

GAME NOTES: Tampa Catholic's final two drives seemed promising but blew up both times at midfield; the second-to-last drive came to a half with a fumble and the final drive was thwarted by a holding penalty after Henry McCloud looked to have given the Crusaders a first down deep in CCC territory with less than two minutes to play. ... Tampa Catholic began to break off long runs on its last drive, partly due to CCC changing its defense. "We were worried about trick plays," CCC linebacker Bobby Zagers said.

STAT OF THE GAME: Tampa Catholic had six first downs, three of which came on its final two drives.

QUOTE OF THE GAME: "I think that flag came two minutes after the game." - TC coach Bob Henriquez, about the holding call that thwarted the Crusaders' final drive.
