Mars Inc.'s Mars Petcare recalled dry cat and dog food made at its Everson, Pa., plant because of possible salmonella contamination. The amount of food involved wasn't disclosed.
No direct link has been established between the food made at Everson and any pet or human sickness, the company said. Mars Petcare stopped production July 29 after a possible connection was discovered between the food and two isolated cases of Salmonella Schwarzengrund in humans.
For products affected, the company said consumers should look for "17" as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC. For Pedigree products, they should look for "PAE" on the bottom line. They also can call 1-877-568-4463 or consult www.petcare.mars.com.
The brand names include items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.
