A 19-year-old Fort Meade woman died Sunday morning in a traffic crash in Lake Wales, Polk County deputies say
Rebekah Lea Stortz was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in a car driven by Shamaile Sital, 19, of Lake Wales, deputies say.
At 1:08 a.m. Sunday, Sital was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am north on State Road 17 and tried passing two vehicles in the northbound lane, a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release states. Sital drove onto the southbound lane's grassy shoulder and lost control of the Grand Am.
The Grand Am slid sideways about 100 feet. The front of the car struck a grassy culvert incline and became airborne. It rolled several times, partially ejecting Stortz and rolling over her.
Another passenger, Alessander Rodriguez, 18, of Lake Wales, suffered head injuries and was taken to Winter Haven Hospital.
There were two other passengers, deputies say. No one else was seriously injured, deputies say.
An investigation is ongoing.
