Kissimmee Bass Bite Strong

Published: September 15, 2008

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mark Cook.

Although both air and water temperatures are still in the 90s, the bass bite has been good to excellent from Lake Toho all the way down to the Kissimmee River.

Moving water has been the key as anglers are setting up on the outflow of the canals that connect the lakes.

Leo Cosce of Camp Lester reported great numbers of bass last week, although the size has dropped a bit. Cosce recommends setting up on the outflow points of the canals and working spinnerbaits, flukes or crankbaits along the moving water.

If you can find any vegetation near the flow of water, you should find bass. The flowing water is also creating bait schools, which in turn brings schooling bass to the surface early in the morning or later in the day.

While too early to really concentrate on specks, the tasty panfish are biting at the crack of dawn and will readily take a jig tipped minnow working around lily pads or submerged grass. North Cove has been a good spot, as has the Catfish Creek area.

This speck season has started to set up as a good one and old-timers will tell you when you have a high water summer it makes for a better speck season.

On the saltwater side, things were a little slow with the extreme high winds and tidal surges brought in by Hurricane Ike. Before the hurricane woes, redfish had started to show up in good numbers, as the fall redfish run will soon be underway.

The south shore area all the way down to Sarasota Bay were showing large redfish schools with many of the fish being over slot. Snook action was also hot in the backcountry waters especially near Port Manatee down to Terra Ceia.
