TAMPA - Gas prices climbed again today in the Tampa Bay area after Hurricane Ike, and the Florida attorney general's office said it is being flooded with complaints about the price spikes.
Sandi Copes, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, said that as of this morning, there had been 738 complaints about gasoline price gouging related to Hurricane Ike.
Also today, AAA said its daily survey of gas prices found the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Tampa to be $3.784, or more than 5 cents higher than the price Sunday. In other parts of the state the price was even higher today: $3.90 in Miami, for example.
The attorney general's office has set up a toll-free hot line for people with complaints of gas gouging: 1-866-966-7226.
Even as consumers grumbled about rising gasoline prices, the cost of crude oil tumbled today to less than $100 a barrel – a sign that the spike in gasoline prices might be short-lived.
