A lockdown of five Sarasota schools was lifted at 4:30 p.m. today after police arrested two armed men they say entered a home on Victoria Avenue and attacked a person inside.
The victim, Burrell F. McKinley, 47, was taken by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center. His condition was not available.
After the attack, the armed men ran from the house at 4941 Victoria Ave., the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said. Authorities then placed the five nearby schools on lockdown about 2:30 p.m.
Deputies in a helicopter and police dog units on the ground found the men. One was arrested at Peachtree Street and Iola Drive. The second man was arrested at 4115 Nelson Ave., deputies said.
Authorities identified the armed men late Tuesday night as Donald E. Samber Jr., 45, and Donald E. Samber III, 21, both of 2819 45 St. E., Bradenton. Both have been charged with attempted murder and armed home invasion, the sheriff's office said.
The investigation is ongoing.
The schools placed on lockdown were: New Gate School, Ashton Elementary and Sarasota Middle School on Ashton Road; Wilkinson Elementary on Wilkinson Road; and Church of the Palms Day Care at 3224 Bee Ridge Road.
