ST. PETERSBURG - A man who accidentally shot himself with an air-powered nail gun on the roof of his house this morning was brought to the ground with the help of a ladder truck, St. Petersburg fire officials said.
David Leaks, 54, was using the nail gun to put wire lath on his roof so he could apply stucco to it, said Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
The fire department's technical rescue team decided to put Leaks in a basket on the roof of his house at 1507 52nd Ave. N. before loading the basket into the bucket of the ladder truck, Granata said.
The technique was a safe way to "remove a 260 pound patient off the roof," Lt. Scott Zweifel, the technical rescue team commander, said of the 11:32 a.m. rescue.
Leaks was transported by ambulance to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment and is in stable condition, Granata said.
