Middleton defensive assistant football coach and former Jefferson linebacker Keith Newman was arrested on Monday by the Tampa Police Department on Hillsborough County Sheriff's warrants for grand theft in the third degree and four counts of depositing items with intent to defraud, according to Tampa police spokesperson Andrea Davis.
He is being held on a $10,000 bond.
Sheriff's spokesperson JD Callaway said Newman was depositing checks from a closed account into a current account. The warrants date to July.
Newman was a standout linebacker at Jefferson and won the Guy Toph award, given to Hillsborough County's top football player, in 1994. He played at the University of North Carolina and spent eight seasons in the NFL, including four with the Buffalo Bills.
When reached Monday, Middleton coach Harry Hubbard said he wasn't aware of Newman's arrest. Hillsborough County athletic director Lanness Robinson said Newman is a volunteer coach and is not employed by the county school district.
Middleton (1-1) plays at Plant (1-1) on Friday.
