ST. PETERSBURG - Firefighters had to lift a vehicle this morning to rescue a driver after a two-car wreck, fire officials said.

The identity of the driver was not available.

Firefighters and police responded to a report of an overturned Dodge Magnum at 1801 34th St. S. at 6:35 a.m., said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.

The Dodge Magnum had flipped several times following a collision with a Chevrolet Malibu and was resting against a building with a man trapped inside, Granata said. Firefighters were able to lift the car high enough to pull the man out, but, once freed, the man tried run to away before he collapsed, the spokesman said.

He is expected to survive his injuries, as are the two occupants of the Malibu, Granata said. Their names were not available, either. All three were taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

The Magnum was traveling at a high rate of speed in the westbound lanes of 18th Avenue South before it crashed into the Malibu at 34th Street, Granata said.
