Forty-four members of a Lakeland staffing agency received American Red Cross volunteer training in one day to help with hurricane relief efforts in Texas.
The workers from Althera Staffing, Inc. were made available to the Polk County Red Cross chapter this week for training in sheltering, feeding and bulk distribution, according to a written statement released today.
Thirty-eight new volunteers will be taken to Orlando International Airport at 1 p.m. Thursday for a 3:10 p.m. flight to Texas to help residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.
"What I'm looking for is just to help somebody," Althera Chief Executive Officer Ellis Hinton said in a statement. "We want to let people know we're here to help whenever we can."
Althera provides businesses with workers in construction and health care. Another 30 people from the staffing company will be trained with the Red Cross on Sept. 26.
