TAMPA - Wharton volleyball coach Nicole Weeden saw her team mature before her eyes on Thursday night.
Despite their problems serving the ball, the Wildcats defeated Leto 30-28, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, in a match that saw over a dozen ties.
In Game 1, the lead changed on almost every possession. Wharton (4-2) led 19-18 and had momentum, but Leto wouldn't go quietly. The game was tied at 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27 before the Wildcats claimed victory.
Leto (2-3) tied Game 3 at 18, 19, 20 and 23 and scored four consecutive points in the game to keep its chances alive.
Junior Fatimah Dominguez led the Falcons with 22 kills. Rachel Rakoczy led Wharton with 10 kills and three aces while Molly Delattre had 10 kills and one ace. Setter Carlie Liffrig had 32 assists.
"Our girls played with so much heart," Weeden said. "I've never seem them play like that before."
Wharton, which advanced to the region playoffs in 2006, plays a pivotal district game Wednesday against Armwood (3-1), who advanced to the playoffs as the district runner-up last year.
