TALLAHASSEE - It was the final practice before one of the biggest home games in years for the Florida State Seminoles.
According to the head football coach, it didn't go all that well.
"From what I saw, we had so many missed assignments out there today," Bobby Bowden said after Thursday's practice. "We could not have won that game with all the missed assignments we had. They've got 48 hours to learn what they're doing."
When asked if that worried him, Bowden replied: "I don't worry about things like that. That's their worry. They've got to get it straightened out."
And they'll have to do it soon.
Because Saturday night, the No. 24 Seminoles (2-0) host the No. 18 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0) in a huge early-season test for both teams.
In fact, the magnitude of this weekend's showdown might have been one of the reasons for the Seminoles' sloppiness Thursday afternoon.
"I think a little bit of it is everyone's getting a little bit nervous now, getting a little excited," sophomore quarterback Christian Ponder said. "I think that might have had a little to do with it."
He added: "For some guys, especially the young guys, these Thursday practices are still a little new to them. A lot of guys kind of want to walk through it a little bit since we're not in pads, and I think that had something to do with it. But we've still got two days. And we're going to correct it ... we'll be ready to go."
With the game less than two days away, Ponder said he had no regrets about the non-guarantee guarantee - "I got to say we're not going to lose this game. I think everybody is going to be prepared and everyone is going to be excited, so I think it's going to be tough for us to lose this game," - he offered during a Monday interview session.
"Not at all," Ponder answered with a laugh Thursday. "The guys have really backed me up and we've worked hard all week."
