CLEARWATER - Countryside High School students went home a half-hour early today after a fence contractor accidentally damaged a gas line, Pinellas County School District spokeswoman Andrea Zahn said.
Students were evacuated from the school as a precaution at about 1:15 p.m. With normal dismissal at 1:50 p.m., school officials decided to send them home early, Zahn said.
She said the contractor hit a gas line while digging for a fence post behind the school. Students were sent outside at the front of the school and then dismissed.
Fire rescue teams responded, and the gas company capped the leak, which posed no threat to the school or students, Zahn said. Faculty and staff members were allowed inside after students were dismissed.
