Events

AFRICAN VIOLET SHOW: The ABC's of Gesneriads, a judged show and sale, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Great Room by the Bay at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 Palm Ave., Sarasota. Admission is free to Selby members; Florida residents can buy-one-get-one-free for $17 during September. Hosts are Suncoast and Tampa Bay Gesneriad Societies. PEPPER CELEBRATION: The I Like It Hot! festival and barbecue is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at MinReg Hall, 6340 126th Ave., Largo. The event includes hot sauce and salsa competitionsand lots of pepper plants. Admission is $3 for ages 13 and older.

ORCHID SHOW & SALE: The Florida West Coast Orchid Society's annual show and sale is noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 3, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5 at the The Honeywell MinReg Building, 6340 126th Ave. (between U.S. 19 and 66th Street), Largo. Questions? Call Brent Finke at (727) 460-4606.

Classes

FLORIDA-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING: Learn how to properly prune trees and shrubs, how to effectively use fertilizers and pesticides, and which fertilizers are best, then take a garden tour. KNOW YOUR BUTTERFLIES: Identify the butterflies in your garden and help with the Fall Butterfly Count by taking the Fall Butterfly Identification Seminar from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive, N.E., St. Petersburg. WICKED WEED WORKSHOP: Learn how to rid your yard of invasive, exotic plants; bring in mystery plants for identification, and get advice on weed control from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive, N.E., St. Petersburg.
