TAMPA - Two local Red Cross volunteers are on their way to Texas to help with Hurricane Ike relief efforts.
Lynn Skyrms and Kel Bartley just returned from Florida's east coast, where they were assisting victims of Tropical Storm Fay. They left again Wednesday morning in a Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle to deliver hot meals, water and cleaning supplies to neighborhoods devastated by Ike.
The pair will join four other local volunteers, plus more than 200 mobile feeding trucks. Skyrms and Bartley committed to a three-week assignment in the hardest hit areas.
The American Red Cross says it costs about $2,500 to deploy each truck. The organization announced Wednesday that it has teamed with Publix Super Markets to collect more donations. Customers can add a contribution of any amount to their grocery bills when they check out.
