PLANTER'S ALMANAC
What To Do This Month
Set strawberry plants: Strawberry plants are treated as annuals in Florida. Broadcast 2 1/2 pounds of 6-8-8 (or similar) fertilizer over a 100-square-foot bed.
Bare root plants should be set in a moist, well-drained soil. Spread roots out in a fan shape in the planting hole; do not cover the plant's crown or leave roots exposed. Water daily until established.
Prune cold-sensitive plants: Hedges and ornamental plants that are susceptible to cold damage should be given a final pruning so new growth can mature and harden off by winter.
Watch for lace bug infestations: These sucking insects attack azaleas, pyracantha and sycamores, producing whitish speckling on the top of the leaves. Shiny black spots of excrement can be found on the leaves' undersides.
Systemic insecticides such as Orthene and Disyston 2 percent granules are effective. Repeat application in 10 to 14 days.
Correct yellowing in palms: Yellowing of older palm fronds usually is associated with magnesium deficiency. To prevent this, apply magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) at a rate of 1 to 5 pounds depending on the size of the palm.
