Troopers are investigating a 2-week-old crash as a traffic homicide after a toddler in one of the cars died this morning.
Three-year-old Malia Jones died about 2:30 a.m. She was riding unrestrained in a 2002 Dodge Neon that was hit by an oncoming car Sept. 6, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dorothy Hillard Makinson, 51, of Seminole, was about to make a left turn onto the Interstate 4 onramp from eastbound Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in her 2001 Camry when she failed to yield to the Neon, troopers said.
The right front of Aiyana Shanteze Jefferson's Neon was hit. Jefferson also had 5-year-old Jimmie Aikens in the car.
Makinson, Jefferson and the two children were taken to Tampa General Hospital.
Makinson was charged with violation of right of way. Jefferson was charged with two counts of child restraint violations.
