TAMPA - Tampa Police Department homicide detectives have made an arrest in the Sept. 7 death of a woman found in her North Florida Avenue apartment's bathtub, police say.
Officers arrested the woman's boyfriend, Guillermo Lazo-Naranjo, 51, police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
In a news release, police identified the victim today as Angela Perez, 52. Her name previously had not been released because her family members hadn't been notified.
The Medical Examiner's Office notified police today that her cause of death was homicide. Lazo-Naranjo was arrested at 5:20 p.m. today and charged with second-degree murder.
Police initially said Perez called someone she knew and said Lazo-Naranjo was beating her again and she needed help. That was at 2:40 a.m. The boyfriend said he found the body in the bathtub about 9:40 a.m. Sept. 7. Lazo-Naranjo told police he was the only person with the woman after 1 a.m., according to an arrest affidavit.
Perez appeared to have been beaten and the injuries were worse than from a fall in the tub, police said at the time.
Autopsy results show Perez died of blunt impact trauma to the torso with a laceration of the liver and spleen.
Lazo-Naranjo, of 8406 N. Ashley St., remained in Orient Road Jail. No bail had been set.
