A Pinellas County deputy convinced a man with a cinder block tied to his leg to not jump off a Sunshine Skyway fishing pier Thursday night.
Deputy Christopher Parkins was sent to the Skyway's north fishing pier about 8 p.m. Thursday after dispatchers received a call, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Parkins said he found Aaron Poindexter distraught and ready to drown himself with a cinder block tied to his leg.
The two talked about an hour as Parkins established a rapport with Poindexter, deputies said.
Poindexter was later taken into protective custody and then to a mental health facility, authorities said.
St. Petersburg police officers and members of the U.S. Coast Guard assisted Parkins at the pier.
