THE DIFFERENCE: Despite entering the game with an 0-2 record and gaining just 197 total yards and nine first downs, Wharton's maligned offense also was its best defense. The Wildcats gained 213 yards, including 138 rushing, and 13 first downs. More importantly, they ran 51 plays to visiting East Bay's 35, keeping the Indians' potent rushing attack off the field.
GAME NOTES: East Bay (2-1) entered with one of Hillsborough County's best rushing attacks, gaining 688 yards in its first two games, but was held to just 164 yards on 34 carries - most coming in the fourth quarter. ... Chaz Burrows was held to 22 yards on five rushes before sitting out the entire second half, with what East Bay coach Brian Thornton deemed "a sprained ankle." ... Wharton (1-2) grabbed a 22-6 lead with 11:13 remaining following Andrew Clifford's 1-yard quarterback sneak. East Bay responded with 16 consecutive offensive plays spanning two touchdown drives to close within 22-19.
STAT OF THE GAME: This marks the third straight season Wharton has beaten East Bay by three points.
QUOTE OF THE GAME: "I think this team is starting to believe in themselves now. They weathered the storm of those first two games against Freedom and Armwood and now it's time to keep getting better." - Wharton coach David Mitchell
