TAMPA - University of South Florida officials may think daytime drinking's a drag, but USF senior James Callihan disagrees.
He's circulating a petition on the Facebook social networking Web site calling for a return of midday beer and wine at Beef O'Brady's, which opened at the new Marshall Student Center in late August.
USF officials said students had been sipping beers between classes and employees were found drinking on their lunch breaks -- all in violation of the university's own drug and alcohol policy.
Callihan's petition, which had gathered nearly 1,900 supporters by Thursday afternoon, reads:
"We are not asking the University to change the legal drinking age, we are simply asking to be able to have a beer with our friends on campus at the end of our day.
"Do not punish the good students because of the actions of a few. By all means punish those who drink in between classes and who over indulge.
"Allow us the opportunity to make the right decision, and we will."
Students likely won't get that opportunity, though. USF spokesman Michael Hoad said that President Judy Genshaft won't allow that to happen.
