TAMPA - The Florida Department of Transportation has handled more than 2 million calls through its 511 traffic information line since starting the free service four years ago.
By dialing 511 from a cell phone or land line, callers access a voice-activated menu offering detailed information on traffic conditions on major local roads, including interstates 75, 275 and 4. The service also reports on crashes, lane closures, construction, emergency evacuations and Amber alerts for missing children.
The department offers similar information, plus e-mail alerts, on a Web site, www.511tampabay.com.
