MIAMI - University of South Florida senior linebacker Brouce Mompremier was taken off the field in the third quarter of today's game at Florida International in an ambulance with an unknown injury.
Amy Woodruff, USF assistant director of communications, said that Mompremier is in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, and can move his arms and legs. He is undergoing tests on his neck and will likely spend the night at the hospital, she said.
FIU radio announcers said doctors on the field thought it might be a spinal cord injury. ESPNU television camera showed Mompremier moving his arms and legs. After a delay of about 20 minutes, Mompremier was taken to a nearby soccer field, where a medical helicopter landed to fly him to a hospital, the Associated Press reported.
Mompremier was injured with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter when he collided with USF senior safety Carlton Williams, while making a tackle.
Mompremier remained on the field for several minutes before being lifted on a back board and then placed into the ambulance.
Mompremier, a senior from Miami, is one of four senior captains for the Bulls. Several of his family members were in attendance.
Williams limped off the field with an apparent left leg injury.
USF was leading 10-0 at the time of the injury. They went on to win the game 17-9.
