WESLEY CHAPEL - Saddlebrook Resort was honored Monday by the Florida Department of Environmental Services, earning the Florida Green Lodging Program's "One Palm Certification."
During its recent $50 million renovation, Saddlebrook officials took steps to make the resort more environmentally friendly. The redesigned Saddlebrook golf course uses one-third of the water used to irrigate a typical Florida golf course, a news release stated.
The resort added a computerized, high-efficiency energy management system for conference center climate control, a recycling program and high-efficiency lighting in all guest rooms. Saddlebrook achieved an average 22 percent reduction of water consumption, a 26 percent reduction in electricity consumption and a 13 percent decrease in solid waste, the news release stated.
"Saddlebrook Resort is deeply committed to environmental responsibility and is proud to be part of the Florida Green Lodging Program," said Sean Dempsey, a sales director and chairman of the resort's Green Committee.
"We consider this program to be an important part of our portfolio of ecologically responsible business practices, and we continue to seek out new ways to be cleaner and more efficient in all of our efforts by partnering with suppliers and vendors who do the same."
