BOSTON - Chris Crane ran for a pair of third-quarter scores and threw a touchdown pass early in the fourth after being booed and benched to lead Boston College to a 34-7 win Saturday against Central Florida (1-2).
Crane, starting just his fourth game after backing up graduated QB Matt Ryan, went 16-for-34 for 207 yards with three interceptions for the Eagles (2-1).
Montel Harris rushed 13 times for 112 yards and backup quarterback Dominique Davis threw a late TD pass for BC.
Davis, a redshirt freshman, took over for Crane with the Eagles at their own 46 midway into the opening quarter and marched them 47 yards in 12 plays before Steve Aponavicius hit the left upright with a 24-yard attempt.
Crane gave BC a 10-7 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run to end the Eagles' first possession of the second half.
Then his 48-yard scoring toss to Brandon Robinson made it 24-7.
FLORIDA A&M 51,
HOWARD 24
WASHINGTON - Eddie Battle threw for 154 yards and accounted for two touchdowns to lead Florida A&M past Howard.
Phillip Sylvester rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown for the Rattlers (2-1, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
Florida A&M jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter when Joseph Wims returned a fumble off a snap for a 65-yard touchdown. Quier Hall followed with a 67-yard interception for a score.
MINNESOTA 37,
FLORIDA ATLANTIC 3
MINNEAPOLIS - Four interceptions by the vastly improved Minnesota defense, including a 50-yard return for a touchdown by Simoni Lawrence, helped the Gophers top Florida Atlantic (1-3) and take an unbeaten record into the Big Ten season.
Rusty Smith was picked off once in each quarter after dismantling Minnesota last year for 463 yards and five touchdowns. After giving the ball away seven times in last season's loss to Florida Atlantic, the Gophers (4-0) have a 13-2 advantage in turnovers this year.
BETHUNE-COOKMAN 34,
SAVANNAH STATE 9
DAYTONA BEACH - Brian Sumler scored two touchdowns to lead Bethune-Cookman to victory against Savannah State.
Sumler, who rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries, was one of four running backs to score for the Wildcats (2-1). Maurice Francois added 124 yards rushing on 20 carries for Bethune-Cookman, which outgained the Tigers (2-2) 412-43 on the ground.
