PITTSBURGH - LeSean McCoy ran 27 yards for a go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter despite being outrushed by Iowa's Shonn Greene in a matchup of top running backs, and Pittsburgh rallied after losing a double-digit lead to beat the Hawkeyes 21-20 Saturday.
McCoy, who set a Big East freshman rushing record last season but still doesn't have a 100-yard game this season, also had a 28-yard catch on the 80-yard drive that gave Pitt a 21-17 lead. The Panthers (2-1) led 14-3 in the second quarter, only to have Greene lead two touchdown drives that put Iowa (3-1) up 17-14.
Greene's 6-yard scoring run made it 14-10. Later, Greene carried three times for 27 yards after a pass interference call on Aaron Berry gave Iowa a first down at the Panthers' 28, leading to quarterback Jake Christensen's 2-yard TD run and Iowa's only lead of the game, with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the third.
Greene was held to 14 yards in the fourth quarter in his fourth consecutive 100-yard game but still outrushed McCoy 147-78 in the first Iowa-Pitt game in 56 years.
The Hawkeyes again used two quarterbacks. Ricky Stanzi (seven of 10, 79 yards) outplayed Christensen (12-of-24, 124 yards) in the first half only to have Christensen lead an important scoring drive in the third quarter - just as he did the week before in a 17-5 win over rival Iowa State.
NAVY 23, RUTGERS 21
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Matt Harmon kicked a late field goal in front of Naval Academy graduate and presidential candidate John McCain to give the Midshipmen a 23-21 win against winless Rutgers on Saturday.
McCain was there for the 50th reunion of the Class of 1958, and part of a record crowd of 37,821 that saw Harmon's third field goal sail through with 2 minutes, 6 seconds to play.
Eric Kettani rushed for a career-high 133 yards on 20 carries and scored on a 2-yard run as Navy (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak. Rutgers opened the season with three straight losses for the first time since 1999.
SYRACUSE 30,
NORTHEASTERN 21
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Doug Hogue gained 100 yards and scored two touchdowns, Curtis Brinkley ran for 145 yards and another score, and Syracuse held off Northeastern 30-21 on Saturday for its first win of the season.
Syracuse, which had lost its first three games by a combined 127-51, finally found an obliging opponent in Northeastern (0-3), a member of the Football Championship Subdivision.
CINCINNATI 45,
MIAMI (OHIO) 20
CINCINNATI - Junior quarterback Tony Pike, making his first career start for the Bearcats, was 20-of-24 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns in a victory against Miami of Ohio.
Pike, who had just 38 career pass attempts going into the game, replaced senior Dustin Grutza who fractured his right fibula with a residual high ankle sprain in the fourth quarter on Sept. 6 at No. 4 Oklahoma.
