Key West Recovery Rides On Poker Run

KEY WEST - Thousands of motorcyclists are traveling the Florida Keys Overseas Highway to Key West this weekend, helping to refuel an economy hit hard when Hurricane Ike and two other tropical storms brushed by the island chain.
Keys tourism officials estimate the 36th annual Key West Poker Run will generate $7.5 million in visitor-related spending, brought in by riders on as many as 10,000 bikes.
Although the Keys were spared significant damage, visitor evacuations for Ike and Tropical Storm Fay, plus fringe winds from Hurricane Gustav, resulted in tourism losses of about $29 million.
The motorcycling event also benefits several charities.
