Parking Fines Will Increase In St. Petersburg

Published: September 22, 2008

The St. Petersburg City Council approved last week a $7.50 increase in overtime parking fees, the first increase in parking fines in more than 10 years, officials said.

Effective Oct. 1, the fine for overtime and expired meter tickets will be $25, up from $17.50, city director of transportation and parking Joe Kubicki said in a statement.

The increase will help pay staffing costs for local school crossing guards and cover the rising costs for fuel, among other expenses, Kubicki said. Motorists are expected to be more in compliance with city regulations with the increased fines, he said.

Business owners in downtown St. Petersburg that rely on street parking for customers have been concerned that the current $17.50 fine is not high enough to effectively discourage illegal or overtime parking, Kubicki said.
