DETROIT - Cleveland pitcher Fausto Carmona was suspended six games and Detroit slugger Gary Sheffield was penalized four games Monday for their brawl last week.
Indians catcher Victor Martinez and infielder Asdrubal Cabrera were suspended three games each and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson.
Sheffield was hit by a pitch from Carmona on Friday night in Cleveland. Moments later, the designated hitter charged the mound from first base, starting a bench-clearing scrap.
"I've been in a lot of brawls, being a peacemaker, and when someone's back is to you, you pull them away - that's what you are supposed to do," said Sheffield, who will not appeal.
"You don't take cheap shots, and that's what happened. I take that personally, and when I find out who it was, they are going to have to deal with me," he said.
Sheffield, a Tampa native, chose not to give any details about what he meant when he said the Cleveland players would have to "deal" with him.
"I'm not going to get here and talk about what I'm going to do," he said. "I'm just going to do what I'm going to do, and if I challenge someone, I'm going to do it to their face. I don't want it to be a surprise."
MARLINS: A judge will not rule on the financing plan for a new ballpark until Oct. 2.
Miami Circuit Judge Jeri Beth Cohen said she will wait to issue a final ruling in the case until the rehearing period for a key decision from the Florida Supreme Court ends.
Cohen had already been waiting for the state's high court to reach a decision on the issue.
The state's high court ruled last week it made a mistake a year ago by requiring voter approval for billions of dollars worth of local redevelopment projects.
PIRATES: Pittsburgh is nearing agreement on a $6.4 million, four-year contract with its top draft pick that would end a contentious two-month dispute that led the players' union to file a grievance against the commissioner's office.
Pedro Alvarez's major-league deal would replace the $6 million minor-league deal he agreed to last month, according to two people familiar with the negotiations, both speaking on condition they not be identified because a written agreement had not yet been finalized.
For a Pirates-Alvarez deal to be finalized, the commissioner's office and players' association likely would have to settle a grievance filed by the union Aug. 27 alleging that Major League Baseball violated its labor agreement by approving a verbal deal between Alvarez and the Pirates that was reached shortly after the midnight deadline on Aug. 15.
