LARGO - Julie Janssen now may officially drop the "interim' from her title.
The Pinellas County School Board voted 7-0 this morning to approve a three-year contract to make Janssen the superintendent of schools.
The board voted by the same margin on Sept. 16 to offer the job to Janssen, who has filled in as interim superintendent since June.
The contract pays Janssen $200,000 a year, with annual increases up to 5 percent based on her performance reviews. The board had set a salary range of $200,000 to $240,000.
The contract runs through June 30, 2011. Compensation items include a $900 monthly allowance for an automobile and associated expenses, a $250 monthly communication allowance for cell phones and other devices, and a retirement account contribution of 6.5 percent of her salary.
Janssen, 59, started as a teacher in Pinellas in 1970. She left the district for about nine years to teach in her native country, Belize, before returning and becoming a principal and administrator, rising to deputy superintendent.
She was selected over Nicholas Gledich, an Orange County school executive, after the board's first choice, Alberto Carvalho, took the superintendent job in Miami-Dade County, where he was the associate superintendent.
She was a favorite of many community and professional organizations, which at times led to tense debate as board members considered the three candidates.
Board Chairwoman Nancy Bostock congratulated Janssen after the vote today.
"We thank you for your patience with us during this process," Bostock said.
