Parking scofflaws in St. Petersburg soon will be paying more.
The St. Petersburg City Council last week approved a $7.50 increase in overtime parking fines, the first increase in parking fines in more than 10 years, officials said.
Effective Oct. 1, the fine for overtime and expired meter tickets will be $25, up from $17.50, city director of transportation and parking Joe Kubicki said in a statement.
The increase will help pay staffing costs for local school crossing guards and cover the rising costs of fuel, among other expenses, Kubicki said.
In addition, business owners in downtown St. Petersburg who rely on street parking for customers have been concerned that the current $17.50 fine is not high enough to effectively discourage illegal or overtime parking, Kubicki said.
