TAMPA - A Mason-Dixon poll released this morning on NBC's "Today" show, showed that if the presidential election was held today, Florida voters slightly favored Sen. Barack Obama over Sen. John McCain.
The difference was 2 percentage points, and the margin for error in the poll of 625 randomly selected "likely voters" was 4 points. Overall, the poll showed that 47 percent of the survey would vote for Obama and 45 percent for McCain.
The poll showed that each candidate had captured the favor of different parts of the state. Forty-nine percent of those surveyed in the Tampa Bay area favored Obama. Fifty-nine percent of those polled in Southeast Florida favored Obama.
McCain's strong areas were North Florida, where he was picked by 55 percent , and Southwest Florida, where 53 percent would vote for him, the poll showed.
Forty-nine percent of males in the survey favored McCain against 45 percent who would vote for Obama, and 49 percent of women favored Obama versus 41 percent for McCain.
The younger the demographic, the higher percentage favored Obama. Fifty-six percent of those between 18 and 34 favored Obama compared with 36 percent who would vote for McCain, and 48 percent of those older than 65 favored McCain against 44 percent for Obama.
Along racial lines, 88 percent of blacks surveyed said they would vote for Obama, compared with 5 percent who would back McCain. Of the white voters polled, 50 percent said they would vote for McCain, 42 percent for Obama.
Forty-nine percent of the Hispanic respondents favored McCain against 43 percent for Obama.
