TAMPA - A raccoon that snuck into a Tampa Electric Co. substation in Ybor City this morning caused a power outage to about 3,500 people, an official said.
TECO spokesman Rick Morera said the outage occurred about 4 a.m., after the raccoon came into contact with some electrical equipment. Power had been restored to the affected customers by about 5:30 a.m.
The furry bandit did not survive, Morera said.
Outages caused by raccoons and squirrels are fairly common, Morera said.
"Unfortunately, it happens more often than you'd like," he said.
How the critters get into the equipment is often puzzling.
"They find ways," Morera said. "They're shifty and determined."
