A construction worker was struck and killed while setting up signs on a remote stretch of U.S. 98 in northwest Polk County on Monday night, investigators said.
The accident happened about half a mile south of State Road 471 at 9:12 p.m., Polk County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Wood said.
A Lane Construction crew was preparing the roadway for construction by placing signs, Wood said.
The worker, 36-year-old Felipe Felix of 780 W. Davidson St., Bartow, picked up an orange construction cone and began crossing the highway, authorities said. He was wearing a reflective vest and the lights of the construction truck were behind him, Wood said.
A Ford Fusion, driven by 46-year-old Georgia Lynn Jeltema of Zephyrhills struck him, Wood said. Felix died at the scene.
The investigation into the crash continues. No charges have been filed.
