NEW PORT RICHEY – Gulf girls coach Deana Waide knew what had to happen Wednesday night at the New Port Richey Aquatic Complex.
A first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay – the final event of the night – would give her Buccaneers a victory against Pasco. Anything other than first would give the meet to the Pirates. Heading into the event, Gulf held a 46-45 lead. First place was worth 6 points, second was 3 and third was 1.
Kelsey Magolan took an early lead and Aimee Smith, Laura Jauch and Megan Jacobs increased the lead as the Bucs won the event with a time of 4:30.26 and Gulf earned a 55-46 victory.
In the other girls meets, Gulf defeated Ridgewood 69-29 and Pasco downed Ridgewood 70-28.
On the boys side, Pasco defeated Gulf 59-42 and Ridgewood 63-32 while Gulf beat Ridgewood 49-33.
"It was a really good swim between the two teams and we're excited we won," Waide said. "It was important for that relay to come through to give us the win."
Gulf got first place finishes from Smith (50 free, 100 free, 400 free relay), Jacobs (200 free, 400 free relay), Jauch (diving, 400 free relay) and Magolan (100 back, 400 free relay). Jennifer Dombrowski (200 medley relay, 500 free, 200 free relay, 100 breast) and Gabby Gray (200 medley relay, 200 IM, 100 fly, 200 free relay) won four events each for Pasco.
Ridgewood doesn't have the depth to compete in most boys meets but sophomore Joe Geschke continues to post impressive times. He won the 200 free (1:55.48) and 500 free (5:11.75) – both personal bests this season.
Freshman Hunter Swartsel (200 medley relay, 200 IM, 100 back) and Mike Centanni (200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 free) led Gulf while Wesley Starnes (100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) paced the Pirates.
