TAMPA - A Hillsborough County official, a Florida Department of Transportation planner and a retired state lawmaker are among 28 applicants for the top job at the region's transportation authority.
Ten of those vying for the $150,000-a-year post are from Florida's west coast, including Ken Griffin, Hillsborough's assistant administrator for development and infrastructure; Bob Clifford, director of planning for DOT's Tampa Bay office; and Donald R. Crane Jr., a former lawmaker and past president of the transportation and business group Floridians for Better Transportation.
The Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority, which is developing a long-range transportation plan, received a $2 million state grant in the spring to hire an executive director and two other employees and to pay for office space and equipment.
A committee of TBARTA board members is reviewing applications. Agency spokeswoman Cindy Sharpe said committee members will short-list the applicants by late October, and the TBARTA board will then pick the new director.
The winning applicant would start a month or two after that.
The state Legislature created TBARTA two years ago and charged it with creating a transportation plan for Hillsborough and six surrounding counties.
