A car crash this morning has closed Alternate U.S. 19, also known as South Pinellas Avenue, in front of Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, Tarpon Springs police said.

A red 1990 Toyota Camry station wagon struck a 53-year-old woman when she stepped onto the highway near County Club Court at 6:36 a.m., police Capt. Jeffrey Young said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries, Young said.

The driver of the car, John Truitt, of 433 Curlew Place, Tarpon Springs, has not been charged.

Both lanes of Alternate U.S. 19 remain closed as police investigate the crash.
