WESLEY CHAPEL - About 100 people began lining up early this morning to apply for 300 job openings at retail shops that plan to open next month at the new Shops at Wiregrass.
Organizers of the mall's job fair said they expect as many as 1,000 to turn out by day's end.
The job fair is at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, 8310 Galbraith Road, about 5 miles south of the mall, off of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. It runs until 7 tonight and reopens from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Among those who lined up to apply for positions this morning was Lynn Herndon, a agent at an ERA real estate office in Carrollwood. Herndon said the downturn in her industry has crimped her income and she's looking for a second job to make up the gap.
"It's feast or famine" in the real estate industry these days, Herndon said.
She's hoping to leverage her sales skills in a retail position at the mall, which is scheduled to open next month.
Among retailers taking applications are Macy's, Dillard's, Cosi, Cantina Laredo, The Walking Co., Zales and Select Comfort.
