PRATTVILLE, Ala. - Jill McGill, Jane Park and Jeong Jang shot 7-under 65s on Thursday for a share of the Navistar LPGA Classic lead, while top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was two strokes back in her first event in a month.
Ochoa is playing for the first time since tying for sixth in the Safeway Classic on Aug. 24, her fourth top-seven finish in a row, but her seventh straight winless start. She opened the season with six victories in nine starts, including four in a row.
"I'm in a better place mentally," Ochoa said. "I feel very comfortable. I worked a lot on my game and it's always good to get back to competition. I'm going to do my best this week and hopefully win the trophy."
Cristie Kerr and Janice Moodie opened with 66s on the links-style Senator Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex. Sandra Gal, Liz Janangelo, Katie Futcher, Ji Young Oh and Louise Friberg matched Ochoa with 67s.
Sweden's Maria Hjorth, the winner last year in the inaugural event, opened with a 76.
USGA SENIOR MEN: U.S. Walker Cup captain Buddy Marucci of Villanova, Pa., won the USGA Senior Amateur, beating George Zahringer of New York, 2-up at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
USGA SENIOR WOMEN: Diane Lang of Weston won the USGA Senior Women's Amateur for the third time in four years, beating Toni Wiesner of Fort Worth, Texas, 6 and 5 at Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club.
PGA EUROPEAN: Marcus Fraser and Mikael Lundberg each shot 5-under 67 to share the first-round lead of the British Masters at The Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, England. Defending champ Lee Westwood, Marc Warren, Sam Walker, Anders Hansen and Rafa Echenique were one stroke back.
