Impaired Driver Looking At Cell Phone Crashes Into Other Car, Cops Say

Hudson - A woman who was looking at her cell phone while driving drifted across traffic and crashed into another car, seriously injuring the driver, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Honi Lee Ann Carter, 27, of Spring Hill, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg after the wayward car smashed into her vehicle at about 10 p.m. Friday, the highway patrol said.

Troopers said Holly H. Sottile, 28, of Port Richey, was driving east on Hudson Road and looking down at her cell phone. Her car crossed the double line of the two-lane road and into the path of Carter's westbound car, the patrol said.

Carter was pinned in her vehicle and flown by helicopter to Bayfront after she was freed, the FHP said.

Sottile had taken prescribed pain medications and was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, the highway patrol said. She was treated for minor injuries at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and turned over to the Pasco County detention facility, the patrol said. Her bail was set at $5,000, according to jail records.
