JACKSONVILLE - A powerful state senator who served time in federal prison has died in a Jacksonville nursing home.
The family of former Democratic Sen. Dan Scarborough said he died Wednesday after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for 11 years. He was 75.
He was once Florida's second-most powerful senator. He was in the Legislature for 14 years, becoming Senate president pro tem. His political career ended in 1982 when he was convicted of mail fraud and extortion. He spent 17 months in federal prison but maintained his innocence.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at the Westside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, with burial to follow in Riverside Memorial Park cemetery.
