TAMPA - Budget cuts have forced Hillsborough County Animal Services to reduce the hours its animal surrender gate will be open for people who want to give up their pets.
Starting Wednesday, the service will be available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.
The old hours were 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
All pets relinquished by their owners that are 4 months old or older must have a rabies vaccination and a county license tag. Residents with animals that are not in compliance must visit the Animal Services customer service desk to get the necessary documents.
Residents are encouraged to first try to find pets a home with friends, relatives, local rescue groups or shelters such as the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
